Contact: Pam Brookens
Every day Dubuque Franciscans and Associates give the most valuable gifts of all. They give their time. They give their talents. They give of themselves. They give something back to the community to make things a little better for someone else and to make their community a better place to live.

Sisters Celebrating 800 Years of Preaching
Submitted on: 8/09/2007
Contact: Tricia Buxton
The celebration of 800 years of anything is a rare experience in todays fast-paced world. The celebration of the 800-year legacy of St. Dominic's mission is an extraordinary privilege. St. Dominic gathered the first community of followers who would later become the Order of Preachers in a community in France. These pioneer women, 11 in all, became the forerunners of a worldwide Gospel-based movement that even to this day includes hundreds of thousands of women and men dedicated to the preaching of truth. How does one begin to celebrate such an awesome reality? Contact the Sinsinawa Domincians to learn about how they are continuing that holy tradition.

Sister Walks with Indigenous Bolivians
Submitted on: 4/05/2007
Contact: Beth Kress, PBVM
According to Sister Maura McCarthy, PBVM, 19 years missionary to indigenous people in Bolivia, January 20, 2007, is a memorable day in the minds of the Guaraní people of the Ñaurenda community in southern Bolivia.
Around 20 years ago, the Guaraní of Ñaurenda began plotting at night their liberation from the landholder, this after they had worked 12 hours of slave labor in the flaming chaco sun for the "patron," the "owner" of the land which should always have been theirs. Some 20 years later, they spent a day taking possession of the land, the corrals, the cattle and the new calves, the big tractor and tandem disk, and the big house in which the patron had lived. With help, they will pay a debt on a three-year low interest loan for the land, says Maura.
On January 20, Sister Maura witnessed the 20-years commemorative celebration and listened to stories of how the Guaraní of Ñaurenda have struggled to regain their land rights and "what life was like before they left the 'patron' to began their common fields and their family plots."
Maura McCarthy, PBVM, is a Dubuque Presentation Sister who has been a missionary in Bolivia, South America, for 29 years, working the past 19 years in Guaraní Indian promotion. Currently she is involved in the accompaniment and promotion of Guaraní Indian liberation movement in Timboy, Bolivia.

Submitted on: 4/05/2007
Contact: Beth Kress, PBVM
Five Presentation Sisters from Iowa; Newfoundland, Canada; New Orleans; and New York live the story of the Lantern Light ministry in New Orleans, Louisiana. Since October 2005 the Sisters of the Presentation of North America have supported a collaborative ministry among the homeless and underserved through St. Joseph Outreach Program in New Orleans, Louisiana, in Tulane County, one of the poorest counties in the United States.
Recently, the five Presentation Sisters have expanded their collaboration to work with other groups in New Orleans. They have joined St. Joseph Church, a Vincentian parish, and other partner organizations to create a multi-service recovery center on the grounds of the church. Among the collaborating partners are the Fr. Harry Thompson Center, a Jesuit sponsored ministry for the homeless; Lantern Light, Inc, a Presentation service ministry for the poor; the Daughters of Charity Health Services; the Office of Hispanic Ministry of the Archdiocese of New Orleans and other agencies.
